Two sandy beaches stretch for miles from this unpretentious East Neuk town, where the Firth of Forth meets proper countryside. Leven doesn't put on airs - it's a working place with a long promenade that's perfect for clearing your head after Edinburgh's crowds.

The real draw here is having the entire East Neuk coast on your doorstep. Shell Bay runs eastward toward Elie, while westward you can walk practically to Kirkcaldy without seeing another soul on weekdays. The Chain Walk near Elie offers proper cliff-edge hiking if you fancy something more challenging than the beach stroll.

Golf enthusiasts will appreciate being a short drive from Elie Golf Course, one of Scotland's more characterful links courses. History buffs should seek out the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade Memorial and Kilconquhar Parish Church - both tell fascinating wartime stories most visitors miss entirely.

For underground adventures, Macduff's Cave and the atmospheric Devil's Cave provide shelter from coastal winds and glimpses into the area's smuggling past. The caves are a bit of a scramble but well worth it.

Getting here is straightforward enough - Leven sits on the A915 coastal route, with regular bus connections to both Kirkcaldy and St Andrews. The train station serves Edinburgh directly in about an hour.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast. You're close enough to nip into St Andrews for dinner but far enough away to escape the summer crowds. Plus you can walk to the beach for sunrise without fighting for parking.
