The Rivers Frome and Piddle converge here, creating a proper market town that's been holding court since Saxon times. Wareham sits snug between water and heathland, its Georgian facades lining streets that feel refreshingly unhurried compared to coastal Dorset's summer madness.

Climbing Oak Hill rewards you with sweeping views across Purbeck's rolling landscape - on a clear day you can see why the Saxons chose this spot for their fortified settlement. The ancient earthworks at Woolsbarrow Fort tell older stories still, perched on Woolsbarrow Hill where Iron Age tribes once watched these same river valleys.

Bere Wood makes for excellent walking when the town gets too civilised. It's proper woodland, the kind where you might stumble across Henry's Pond tucked away among the trees. Great Coll Wood offers similar escape routes, though both can get muddy after rain - this is Dorset clay country after all.

Archaeology buffs should seek out Combs Ditch, though it takes a bit of detective work to find the earthworks among the bracken. More accessible are the churches - St Nicholas at Winterborne Kingston is worth the short drive, as is the tiny St Andrew's at Winterborne Tomson, which feels wonderfully forgotten.

Poole's just 20 minutes away by car, making Wareham a handy base without the coastal crowds. The train station connects to London via Bournemouth, though services can be patchy. Staying at one of the nearby parks like Wareham Forest Tourist Park puts you perfectly placed for both the Purbeck Hills and the harbour towns, with enough breathing space to appreciate this quieter corner of Dorset properly.
