Cathedral towers rise above the Severn, but Worcester feels more working city than tourist magnet. This ancient settlement where the river bends has proper grit beneath its medieval facade - a place where commuters rush past the remnants of Roman walls and Victorian porcelain works.

The cathedral dominates everything, naturally. But wander beyond and you'll find Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum tucked away with decent local collections, while The Firs offers glimpses into the city's past. St George's Catholic Church stands out among the religious buildings, though most visitors barely notice the blue plaques marking where Dr John Wall and Sir Charles Hastings left their mark on medical history.

Foregate Street station connects you to Birmingham in 40 minutes, making this a sensible base for exploring the wider county. The Malvern Hills rise dramatically to the west - proper hiking country with cracking views across three counties. South lies Tewkesbury and the Cotswolds fringe, while north takes you into Worcestershire's orchard country.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. Several sites along the Severn offer river views, while others like the Malvern Hills Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite put you closer to serious walking territory. Worcester Glamping provides a softer option if you're not the camping type.

The high street struggles like most provincial centres, but the covered markets still have life. Come midweek and parking's easier, though weekend farmers' markets bring proper local produce. It's not the prettiest English city, but it works.
