Alfreton Park

The lake at Alfreton Park sits dead centre in the town, fringed with woodland and surprisingly peaceful given how close it is to the high street. It's the sort of place locals clearly know well - dog walkers, families with pushchairs, anglers lining the banks on weekends. The water itself is the real draw: proper still on calm days, reflecting whatever sky Derbyshire's throwing at you.

This isn't a destination attraction you'd drive an hour to see, but if you're staying at Riddings Wood Holiday Park or Golden Valley Caravan and Camping just down the road, it's exactly the kind of easy walk you want within spitting distance of the campsite. An hour loops the lake comfortably. The paths are well-trodden and mostly flat, so it works for families with younger kids who don't fancy anything too ambitious. Bird watchers get a decent return - herons, grebes, the usual waterfowl. There's something quietly restorative about it, even if it's modest by nature reserve standards.

Go midweek if possible. Weekends draw a crowd, and the charm gets a bit diluted. The town of Alfreton itself is functional rather than thrilling, but that's rather the point - you're here for a break in the Midlands, not a grand tour. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning with tea from a flask and no particular rush to be anywhere else. Free, obviously, and accessible year-round.
