The churchyard at Minstead is quietly stunning in a way that catches you off guard. All Saints' Church sits deep in the New Forest proper, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. Step inside and you're met with that particular smell - centuries of damp stone and prayer books - which sounds dull but genuinely moves something.

What makes this church different isn't flashy architecture or famous monuments. It's the sheer accumulated weight of five hundred years in one small space. The interior holds some proper medieval survivals, and there's an unusual claim: it's supposed to be where Arthur Conan Doyle was buried, though plenty of churches make similar claims and half of them are wrong. The churchyard itself is the real draw - overgrown in all the right ways, surrounded by thick forest rather than suburban houses.

Walkers will get the most from a visit here, especially those doing longer loops through the New Forest. Families with young kids might find twenty minutes is enough; there's nothing interactive, and it can feel a bit austere. History types and anyone drawn to backwoods churches will happily spend an hour pottering about.

You'll need to check locally for opening times when you're in the area - Lyndhurst, just a couple of miles away, is your nearest proper town for supplies. If you're camping at Ocknell or Longbeech (both barely two miles distant), this makes an easy detour on a forest walk. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people camp in the New Forest in the first place.
