Allt Clyn-Iar

Deep in the Ceredigion countryside, Allt Clyn-Iar is a proper forest walk that rewards you with decent views across the rolling West Wales landscape. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shops, no crowds, just trees and fresh air. The woodland itself is mixed, so there's enough variety to keep things interesting rather than plodding through uniform conifers for hours.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and the paths can be muddy and steep in places, so proper boots are essential. Bring a map or download the walk beforehand, as signage is minimal. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do the main loop without rushing.

It sits nicely between Llanybydder and Lampeter, making it an ideal morning or afternoon excursion if you're based at Canvas & Campfires or Lampeter Caravan & Camping. The campsite Canvas & Campfires (5.8 miles away) gets solid reviews and would serve as a better headquarters than Lampeter's offering.

Go on a clear day - that's when the views justify the climb. Wet weather turns it into a proper slog. Families with very young children should probably look elsewhere; there are better-maintained forest parks in the region. But if you've got teenagers who actually enjoy walking and don't need constant entertainment, Allt Clyn-Iar won't disappoint.
