Allt-Y-Moch

The walk up Allt-y-Moch is straightforward rather than spectacular, but that's partly the appeal. This modest peak near Llandinam doesn't demand technical skill or consume a whole day, making it ideal if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Dol-Llys Farm or Gellidywyll are close enough for a morning mission.

The ascent is gentle by Welsh standards. You'll climb through mixed woodland before the views open out across the Powys valleys, all soft greens and distant ridges. On a clear day you can see proper far - the Cambrians fold away in layers. The moorland at the top has that empty, wind-scraped feeling you get in mid-Wales where tourist footfall is thin on the ground.

Allow two to three hours return if you're not rushed. It's not the sort of peak that photographs brilliantly, which means fewer crowds and more space to breathe. Walkers who've overdone the busier Brecon Beacons routes will appreciate the peace. Families with primary-school kids find it manageable, though the path gets boggy in places after rain - proper waterproof boots are non-negotiable.

Best tackled spring through early autumn. Winter visibility can collapse fast in mid-Wales. The nearest decent tea stop is back in Llandinam itself rather than at the trailhead, so bring a flask if you want something hot on top.
