Esgair Lwyd

The walk up Esgair Lwyd rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland - the kind of expansive landscape that makes you understand why people move to Mid Wales and never leave. It's a straightforward hill walk from near Llandinam, nothing too technical, though the wind can get a bit fierce near the summit depending on the day.

This is walker terrain, plain and simple. The peak itself sits at around 600 metres, and while that's hardly Alpine, the open moorland character means you're properly exposed up here - no woodland shelter, just grass, stone and sky. Allow a couple of hours for a round trip if you're coming from the car park, longer if you're taking your time and stopping to pick out landmarks.

The real appeal here is as part of a wider Powys walking circuit rather than a standalone destination. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Maesmawr Farm Resort, Love2Stay Mid Wales, or Red Kite Touring Park are all within five miles - this fits nicely into a day that might also take in other local walks. Summer mornings are best; winter can be grim and visibility drops fast.

Kids might find it a bit of a slog unless they're keen on hills already. There's no cafe at the top, no facilities, just the walk itself. But if you're after genuine Welsh moorland without the crowds, and you're happy with exercise over spectacle, it's worth the effort. The isolation is rather the point.
