Domen-Ddu

The walk up Domen-Ddu from Llandinam takes you straight into proper Mid Wales hill country - steep in places, muddy after rain, and absolutely worth the effort. You're climbing to a modest peak that rewards the legwork with views across the Clywedog valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. The summit itself is marked by an iron age fort, visible as earthworks if you know where to look - ancient ramparts that feel genuinely remote even though you're only a couple of hours from civilisation.

This isn't a tourist trap. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretive panels explaining what you're looking at. You turn up, you walk, you use your eyes. That's precisely why it works. Walkers will get the most from Domen-Ddu - it's a proper leg-stretcher rather than a gentle stroll - while anyone interested in Iron Age Wales will find the fort itself fascinating, albeit understated. Families with older kids who don't mind climbing can manage it, though younger legs might struggle with the gradient.

Allow two to three hours return from the village. Free, obviously. Go early or late in the day to avoid the bog-standard weekend crowds (though honestly, these hills rarely feel crowded). If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Dol-Llys Farm or Red Kite Touring Park are both within striking distance - Domen-Ddu makes an excellent half-day excursion between longer valley walks. The weather matters here more than elsewhere. Mist rolls in fast.
