Craig Y Paen

The walk up Craig Y Paen is a proper slog, but the view from the top makes it worthwhile. This Powys peak sits just a few miles from Llandinam, offering one of the better vantage points across Mid Wales if you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks like Maesmawr Farm Resort or Red Kite Touring Park.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb - expect around 90 minutes up and back depending on fitness and the precise route you pick. The terrain is rough moorland, typical of the Welsh uplands, so proper boots matter. Once you're at the summit, the views sweep across the Clywedog Valley and beyond, especially good on a clear morning before cloud rolls in.

Historically there's not much to see up there beyond the landscape itself, which is fine - this isn't a tourist attraction with facilities or interpretation boards. It's a walker's peak, plain and simple. Families with older children might manage it, but younger kids could find the featureless climb tedious. The real draw here is the effort-to-view ratio and the sense of isolation you get; nothing fancy, nothing crowded.

Admission is free since it's open moorland. The best approach is from Llandinam village itself, though parking can be tight. Spring and autumn are ideal - summer brings midges, winter can be boggy and slippery. If you're parked up at one of the local holiday parks for a few days, it's a solid half-day outing that justifies a packed lunch and a thermos.
