Allt-Yr-Hendre

The walk up Allt-Yr-Hendre from Llandinam is proper steep, but the ridge views across the Severn Valley make it worth the leg-burning effort. This isn't a high mountain - more of a pronounced hill with attitude - but it punches above its weight for views over Mid Wales. The climb takes about forty minutes at a decent pace, and once you're up there, the landscape opens out in all directions. You can see for miles on a clear day.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and there's no café or facilities at the top, so you need to be properly equipped and reasonably fit. The path can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so decent boots are essential. Allow a couple of hours return, including time to catch your breath at the summit.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Maesmawr Farm Resort or Ty Llewelyn are both close by - this works as a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of walk that clears your head without eating up your entire day. The descent is easier on the knees than the climb, which is always something.
