Auld Wive's Lifts

Two massive stone slabs propped up by smaller boulders, standing on a hillside near Stirling like some Neolithic show-off. That's Auld Wive's Lifts - a Bronze Age burial cairn that's been doing the rounds on Scottish hiking routes for longer than most of us have been alive.

What you're looking at is a portal tomb, essentially a stone-age effort to make a permanent statement about the dead. The whole structure sits bang in the middle of walking country, which means you're not trudging to some fenced-off museum piece - you're actually out in the Lowlands proper, surrounded by proper countryside.

It's not a massive time commitment. Most people spend fifteen minutes examining the stones from every angle, taking photos, and working out the logistics of how Bronze Age folk managed to balance those upper slabs without modern equipment. Kids find it weirdly interesting - there's something about rocks that haven't moved in four thousand years that captures their imagination.

The nearest sensible base is Glasgow, though honestly you're better served by The WHW Hotel & Campsite just three miles away if you're making a proper weekend of the Stirling area. Free to visit, naturally, being an ancient ruin that's nobody's property.

Worth a detour if you're already walking the wider region. Don't expect dramatic views or extensive facilities - it's genuinely just a couple of rocks in a field. But that's precisely why it works.
