Baley Hill

Standing at just over 1,200 feet, this modest Peak District summit delivers views that punch well above its weight. The climb from nearby Ashbourne isn't particularly taxing - a steady uphill walk through farmland and moorland that takes most people about 45 minutes. What strikes you first at the top is how far you can see across the Dove Valley and towards the higher peaks further north.

Walkers will find this a proper little workout without being too demanding. Families with older children should manage it fine, though the terrain gets a bit rough near the summit so decent boots are essential. The path isn't always obvious, particularly in poor weather, so it's not one for inexperienced hikers attempting solo.

There's no entrance fee, naturally, and you can walk it any time of year. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the views particularly striking, though you'll want to avoid it in thick mist when there's nothing to see at all.
