Balluchuan Hazelwood

The standing stones at Balluchuan Hazelwood are modest compared to some of Scotland's more famous monuments, but there's something oddly compelling about them. Two weathered slabs of stone rise from moorland a short drive inland from Oban, marking a Bronze Age burial site that's been standing here for over 4,000 years. You won't find visitor facilities or interpretive boards - just the stones themselves, the surrounding hills, and a profound sense of time.

It's the kind of place that rewards a brief detour rather than a lengthy pilgrimage. The stones themselves take maybe ten minutes to inspect properly, and the real appeal lies in the walk across the rough moorland to reach them. Free to visit, and accessible year-round, though you'll want decent boots and waterproof trousers if you've had recent rain - the moorland gets boggy. Twenty minutes is realistic for a visit, unless you're combining it with a longer walk through the surrounding landscape.
