Belling Rigg Limekilns

Stone kilns crumbling into the Northumberland hillside, their lime-burnt walls still showing the scorch marks of fires long gone cold. Belling Rigg is a genuine archaeological site - not a polished visitor attraction, but the real thing, which means you'll need to work for it a bit.

These are industrial ruins from centuries back, when lime-burning was serious business. The kilns themselves are the main draw - sturdy stone structures where limestone got heated to produce quicklime, used for everything from mortar to fertiliser. Walking around them, you can actually imagine the whole operation: the heat, the dust, the labour. It's the kind of place where history feels genuinely tangible rather than written on a placard.

Best suited to walkers with a genuine interest in industrial archaeology. Families with very young kids might find it underwhelming - it's essentially old stonework, no crowds, no facilities. Older children who've got some grounding in industrial history, though, could find it genuinely engaging. There's no official visitor information readily available, so treat this as an exploratory venture rather than a scheduled stop.

Location-wise, you're close to Hexham, which means it slots well into a wider Northumberland ramble. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wild Northumbrian Tipis is just 1.6 miles away - this makes for a proper morning expedition. Combine it with other Tyne Valley walks and you've got a solid day. Go when the light's decent; overcast days rob the ruins of much of their atmosphere.
