Birch Hill

Standing at just 166 metres, this modest peak above Frodsham might not set any altitude records, but it punches well above its weight for views. On a clear day, you can see right across the Mersey Estuary to Liverpool's skyline, with the Welsh hills rolling away to the west.

Walkers will find the climb gentle enough for most fitness levels - it's more of a pleasant woodland ramble than a proper hike. The path winds through mixed woodland before opening out to reveal those cracking panoramic views. Families with older children should manage it fine, though toddlers might find the uneven terrain a bit much.

Really, it's the accessibility that makes Birch Hill worth your time. You can be up and down in under two hours, leaving plenty of day for other activities. The summit itself is nothing fancy - no visitor centre or cafe - but that's rather the point. It feels properly wild despite being so close to civilisation.
