Off your lead

Off Your Lead is a dog exercise area just outside Frodsham, and it does exactly what it says on the tin - gives your pooch proper space to run about without a lead. This is the spot if you've driven halfway across Cheshire with a cooped-up spaniel or terrier and need somewhere safe to let them burn off some energy.

The field itself is fenced, which means you can actually relax for once instead of white-knuckling the lead while your dog spots a rabbit. You get a decent amount of space, though it's not massive - think a proper dog park rather than endless moorland. The ground can get muddy after rain, so wellies aren't a bad shout if you're visiting in winter.

Dog owners with boisterous breeds will get the most from this. If your dog is nervous or aggressive around other dogs, you might want to time your visit for quieter hours. It's free and accessible most days, though opening hours vary seasonally. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're making a proper visit.

If you're staying at The Ridgeway Country Holiday Park or Lady Heyes just down the road, this is handy for breaking up the day. It's close enough for a quick morning session before heading to Delamere Forest for a longer walk.
