Coronation Plantation

Dense woodland spreads across this elevated patch of County Durham countryside, just outside Barnard Castle. The plantation itself is fairly typical coniferous forest - rows of spruce and pine that create a proper cathedral-like atmosphere when the light filters through. You'll find a network of forestry tracks winding through the trees, though they're not waymarked, so keep your bearings.

Walkers looking for a quiet ramble will appreciate the solitude here. It's not a destination forest by any means - more of a pleasant diversion if you're staying nearby. The tracks are wide enough for pushchairs on the main routes, though it gets muddy after rain. Families might find it a bit samey after half an hour, but older children who enjoy exploring will have fun spotting the occasional clearing or stream.

Being so close to Barnard Castle, it makes sense as an easy morning walk before heading into town for lunch. Don't expect spectacular views or rare wildlife - this is working forest rather than ancient woodland. But if you need some fresh air and a bit of peace, it does the job nicely.
