Hindon Hill

Standing at 377 metres, this modest County Durham peak offers surprisingly rewarding views across Teesdale without the lung-busting effort of its Yorkshire Dales neighbours. The walk up from the minor roads near Barnard Castle takes about 45 minutes through pleasant farmland and moorland edge - nothing too taxing, though proper walking boots are wise given the often boggy approach.

Families with older children will find this a manageable introduction to fell walking, while seasoned hikers might appreciate it as a gentle leg-stretcher or evening stroll. The summit itself isn't particularly dramatic - more of a broad, grassy dome than a proper peak - but on a clear day you'll get lovely views south towards the Yorkshire Dales and east across the Durham countryside.

Best tackled in dry weather when the ground firms up a bit. Allow two hours for the round trip if you're taking your time, though keen walkers could knock it off in half that.
