Blackpool Promenade

The Blackpool Promenade is a seven-mile seafront stretch that's part nature reserve, part Victorian relic, part working seaside. You get the Tower, the piers, the arcades - but also genuine stretches of beach and mudflat that matter for migrating birds and wintering wildfowl. It's free to walk, obviously, and you can spend an afternoon here without spending a penny if you're disciplined about the slot machines.

Birders and nature types will want binoculars. The mudflats between Blackpool and Fleetwood support thousands of dunlin, knot, and oystercatchers, particularly in autumn and winter. Spring brings warblers through if you know where to look. Families with younger kids will get restless after an hour unless there's a pier to explore or fish and chips to consume. Teenagers? They'll actively hate it unless you're staying at Haven Marton Mere or one of the caravan parks within walking distance - then at least the seafront becomes somewhere to kill time between the pool and the arcade.

The promenade works best as a morning walk before the crowds hit, or a sunset stroll if you've parked up at Pipers Height or Ream Hills for the week. It's not dramatic - it's not the Cornish coast - but it does its job. The air's bracing, the light's often good, and you'll see proper seabirds behaving like seabirds, not posing for Instagram. Worth the walk if you're based locally. Don't detour specially.
