Bog Lane Greenspace

A short walk from Wareham takes you to Bog Lane Greenspace, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's the kind of place where you'll spot dragonflies hovering over water and hear more birdsong than traffic - which isn't saying much on the Dorset quietness scale, but you get the idea.

The reserve itself is modest in size, which is actually its greatest charm. There are footpaths threading through wetland and woodland, and the whole thing feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from town. Bring binoculars if you're into spotting things. Summer is the obvious choice - the dragonflies and damselflies are extraordinary, and bog plants flower in ways that city dwellers find properly mesmerising.

It's free to access and works best as a 45-minute potter rather than a half-day expedition. The paths can get boggy (hence the name), so wellies aren't a bad shout, especially after rain. Families with primary school kids will get something out of it - there's enough to spot and discover without requiring the attention span of a teenager. Serious naturalists and photographers, though, will find it genuinely worthwhile.

If you're based at any of the nearby campsites - West Holme Glamping and Norden Farm are closest - it makes an easy morning escape before heading into Wareham itself or onwards to the Jurassic Coast. Don't expect drama, but do expect quiet. That's rather the point.
