Tyneham Village

Walking into Tyneham feels like stepping through time - except the clock stopped in 1943. This entire village was evacuated during the Second World War to make way for military training, and the MOD never quite gave it back. Today you're wandering through abandoned cottages, a church, and a schoolhouse left almost exactly as people left them, frozen in mid-century rural Dorset life.

It's genuinely eerie in the best way. You can peer through windows at desks still laid out, read old notices pinned to walls, and get a real sense of what village life looked like before everything changed. The church remains the focal point - proper haunting, that - and there's enough detail scattered about to keep history buffs occupied for a good couple of hours. Families with older kids will find it absorbing; younger ones might lose interest after an hour unless they're into ghost stories.

Access is seasonal and weather-dependent since the village sits within the Lulworth Ranges live firing area - you'll only get in on certain weekends. Check before you head out from Wareham, about twenty minutes' drive away. It's free to visit, though the walk in isn't trivial and the terrain can be muddy. Combine it with nearby Durdle Door or Lulworth Cove for a proper coastal day out. If you're camping at Durdle Door Holiday Park, this makes an excellent half-day excursion that actually delivers on the historical interest without feeling like a tourist trap.
