The River Frome winds through this ancient Saxon settlement like a lazy afternoon, splitting Wareham into quarters that still follow medieval boundaries. Market days bring a proper buzz to the town square, though midweek you'll find it refreshingly quiet - perfect for exploring the Saxon walls that still encircle much of the old town.

Wareham sits bang in the middle of some of Dorset's most dramatic countryside. The Purbeck Hills roll away to the south, where you can climb West Creech Hill for cracking views across Poole Harbour. Tyneham village, frozen in time since 1943 when villagers were evacuated for military training, makes for a haunting day out. The museum there tells the story brilliantly, and you can wander through the old school and post office.

Gad Cliff offers some of the finest clifftop walking in Dorset, though it's a bit of a trek from town. The abandoned Clavel Tower site provides a fascinating glimpse into the area's industrial past. For something completely different, the Fine Foundation Marine Centre showcases the incredible marine life found off this stretch of coast.

Getting here is straightforward - Wareham station sits on the main London to Weymouth line, making it easily accessible without a car. The town serves as an excellent base for exploring both the Purbeck peninsula and the eastern edge of the Jurassic Coast.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're within easy reach of both Corfe Castle and the stunning beaches around Swanage, while having Wareham's pubs and shops on your doorstep. The surrounding heathland and forests, including Egliston Gwyle, provide endless walking opportunities right from your pitch.
