Povington Hill

The walk up Povington Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes the Dorset heath feel properly vast. It's not a dramatic climb - nothing like the Lake District peaks - but it's enough to get your legs working and your lungs clear, especially when the wind's up across the open moorland. From the top you can see across Wareham and the surrounding heathland, which on a decent day opens up nicely.

This is walker territory, no question. The heath itself is fragile - you'll notice the marked paths - so stick to them and respect the landscape. It takes maybe 45 minutes up from the car park, depending on fitness and how often you stop. Bring water. The exposed position means weather can turn quickly, so check conditions before you head out.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit dull - there's no summit cafe, no facilities, just views and wind. History buffs should know this area was requisitioned during the Second World War as a bombing range, which adds a layer to the landscape if you know where to look.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader Purbeck walk or a break from camp - Wareham sits just a few miles south, and most of the nearby sites (West Holme Glamping is closest at 2.7 miles, Norden Farm a couple of miles further) are perfectly positioned for exploring the heathland. Free to access, and you'll need maybe two to three hours total including descent.
