Brown's Wood

Brown's Wood is a proper Sussex forest just outside Battle - the sort of place locals know about and visitors often miss. It's ancient woodland, dense with oak and beech, with footpaths threading through that give you the feeling of being properly in the countryside without needing a map or hiking boots.

What you get here is straightforward: shade, quiet, and the chance to stretch your legs without crowds. There are paths for an hour's ramble or longer if you fancy it, and the floor is soft with leaf matter - decent for kids who want to splash about without slipping on stone. Dogs love it. History enthusiasts might appreciate that you're walking ground that's been woodland for centuries, though there's no visitor centre or plaques to explain things.

It's free to access, as most woodland is. Go when it's not raining or the paths turn to mud - autumn and spring are best. It's the sort of place that's worth knowing about if you're staying at Beech Estate Campsite nearby, or any of the parks clustered around Battle. On a grey afternoon when you can't face another attraction, this beats a rainy day indoors.

Don't expect facilities or facilities. Expect trees and quiet. It's not a destination on its own - it's the breathing space between Battle Abbey and wherever else you're headed. Walkers will get the most from it; very small children might get bored after thirty minutes. The main charm is simply being among old trees with no noise.
