Cairngorm Brewery

The smell hits you first - that lovely hoppy warmth as you step through the doors of Cairngorm Brewery on the edge of Aviemore. This isn't a tourist trap pretending to be a working brewery. They actually make beer here, proper Scottish ales that take their time and their ingredients seriously.

You can watch the brewing happen from the visitor area, see the tanks and equipment doing their thing. The staff know what they're talking about - not the usual "read from a script" tour guides. They'll explain the difference between their IPAs and their darker brews without making you feel thick if you don't know a mash tun from a kettle. Tastings are included, naturally, and they're generous pours if you're taking notes.

It's a solid couple of hours if you're into beer, maybe one hour if you're just tagging along with someone who is. The gift shop stocks their full range - take home what you like without the airport markup. Kids get bored fairly quickly unless they're old enough to understand fermentation, so it's more for the adults in your group.

Worth timing it right with a stay at Dalraddy Holiday Park, just four miles away. You can base yourself there, explore Cairngorm's outdoor spaces, then finish the afternoon at the brewery without worrying about the drive back. Open weekdays 11am to 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 4pm. No entry charge to look around, though tastings and purchases add up quickly.
