Cantlop Wood

Walk into Cantlop Wood and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy closes overhead and the ground squelches underfoot after rain. It's a working forest near Shrewsbury, so don't expect theme park facilities or marked trails with coloured posts. What you get instead is the real thing: mature trees, fallen logs to clamber over, and the chance to actually feel like you've stepped away from things.

The wood itself is manageable for families with decent boots, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven ground and muddy patches. Walkers and nature types will find it genuinely rewarding - plenty of opportunity to spot woodland birds and simply breathe properly for an hour. It's not massive, so allow 60 to 90 minutes if you're taking your time, longer if you're keen on photography or just sitting on a log watching the light filter through.

Timing-wise, visit after a dry spell if you want to avoid wading through bog. Spring is lovely when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn has its own appeal with fungi and the light changes. Winter can be grim underfoot.

If you're staying at Mill Farm Holiday Park or Lower Hill Campsite - both solid bases within 5 to 6 miles - Cantlop Wood makes a cracking half-day excursion. It's close enough not to eat into your holiday time, but far enough removed from the tourist circuit around Shrewsbury that it feels like a proper find.
