Ward's Coppice

Ward's Coppice is a proper woodland walk just outside Shrewsbury - the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a working managed coppice, which means you're walking through active forestry rather than a manicured country park, and that's rather the point. The trees are dense enough to feel like proper forest, with decent paths threading through. You'll spot the evidence of traditional coppicing - those characteristic stumps where hazel and other hardwoods have been cut back - which gives the whole place a working, lived-in character.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need waymarked trails or facilities. Come expecting woodland, not a visitor centre. An hour is enough to cover the main paths without rushing, though you could easily spend longer if you're into spotting birds or just breathing in the quiet. The coppice supports a good range of wildlife, and it's genuinely peaceful compared to the busier country estates around Shropshire.

If you're camping at Mill Farm Holiday Park or Lower Hill Campsite - both within five miles - this makes a solid morning outing before heading into Shrewsbury itself. It's free access, which is refreshing, though parking is limited and a bit informal. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends can get busy with local dog walkers.

Really it depends what you want from a woodland. If you're after marked trails and tea rooms, look elsewhere. If you want to walk through actual working forest without crowds, Ward's Coppice delivers.
