Stockbatch Plantation

Stockbatch Plantation sits just outside Shrewsbury and offers exactly what you'd expect from a Shropshire woodland - proper quiet, room to breathe, and trails that meander through mature trees without the crowds you'd find at the big country estates. It's a forest, straightforward as that. You walk it. The paths are decent enough, though they can get boggy after rain, so wellies aren't a bad shout if you're visiting in winter.

This is one for people who actually want to walk rather than just say they have. Families with young kids might find an hour here sufficient before restlessness sets in - there aren't visitor facilities or play areas to break things up. But if you've got older children or you're the type who genuinely enjoys being among trees with birdsong as your soundtrack, it's well worth the trip from central Shrewsbury. Dog walkers particularly love it; plenty of space for them to roam.

Admission appears to be free, which is always a bonus. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper circular route, though you can easily do a shorter hour-long loop. The forest doesn't have the dramatic views or historical significance that might anchor a full day out, so it works best paired with other Shropshire attractions - a visit to Shrewsbury itself beforehand, perhaps, or combining it with a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks like Mill Farm or Lower Hill Campsite, both only a few miles away. It's a solid addition to a park-based break rather than a destination in itself.
