Medieval streets wind through one of England's best-preserved historic towns, where the River Severn curves around Shrewsbury in an almost perfect loop. The cobbled alleyways and timber-framed buildings create a proper fairy-tale atmosphere, though the reality is far more vibrant than any tourist board photo suggests.

Shrewsbury Castle dominates the skyline, while The Quarry park stretches along the riverbank - a massive green space that hosts the annual Flower Show. But it's the unexpected corners that really charm: narrow passages like Grope Lane and Fish Street that suddenly open onto market squares. The covered market is still going strong, and Abbey Foregate leads to the red sandstone ruins of Shrewsbury Abbey.

Beyond the town centre, Shropshire's gentle countryside unfolds in all directions. Bomere Pool and Shomere Pool offer peaceful lakeside walks just minutes from the medieval streets. Fox Covert and Cantlop Wood provide proper woodland rambles, while smaller copses like Ward's Coppice and Lightgreen Coppice are perfect for shorter strolls. The landscape here is quintessentially English - rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and that sense of timeless tranquillity.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Direct trains from Birmingham take about an hour, while the A5 and A49 provide good road links. Parking in the town centre can be a right pain during market days, so staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the outskirts makes perfect sense. You'll avoid the morning rush into town and have easy access to both Shrewsbury's medieval delights and the surrounding countryside walks.
