Carn Ffald

The walk up Carn Ffald is proper Pembrokeshire - steep enough to get your heart going, but short enough that you won't regret it halfway up. This isn't some dramatic peak; it's a modest hill just outside Haverfordwest with views that stretch across the inland valleys and, on clear days, towards the coast. The summit itself is cairn-marked and feels properly rewarding for the effort.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a doddle, and it rewards you with real countryside vistas rather than postcard scenery. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine if they're used to walking; younger ones might find the climb tedious. The route takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour up and back depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top.

It's free, naturally. Go early if you want solitude - late morning tends to be when the Haverfordwest walking crowd emerges. The hill works brilliantly as part of a wider rambling trip through the area rather than a standalone outing.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Lleithyr Farm is less than a mile away, and several others cluster within a couple of miles - Carn Ffald makes an excellent morning walk before heading down to the coast or exploring Haverfordwest itself.
