Carrs Hill

Standing at 533 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Durham Dales without the crowds you'll find on more famous fells. The walk up from Barnard Castle takes about an hour and follows well-marked paths through heather moorland - though it can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Families with older children will manage the climb fine, but it's probably too much for little legs. The summit itself isn't particularly dramatic - more of a gentle rounded top than a proper peak - but on a clear day you can see across to the Pennines and down into Teesdale. Worth the effort if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Leekworth or Mickleton Mill and fancy stretching your legs.

Dog walkers love it here, though keep them on leads during lambing season. The moorland can be quite exposed when the weather turns, so check conditions before setting off. Allow three hours for the round trip including time to enjoy the views and maybe a sandwich at the top.

It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though spring and early summer show the heather at its best. Not a challenging walk by Yorkshire Dales standards, but a proper little adventure if you're based around Barnard Castle.
