Swarthy Top

Standing at 469 metres above sea level, this modest fell offers surprisingly good views across Teesdale without the crowds you'll find on better-known peaks. The walk up from the nearest road takes about 45 minutes through rough moorland - proper walking boots essential as it gets boggy after rain.

From the top, you can see right across to the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day, with Barnard Castle visible below in the valley. It's not spectacular by Lake District standards, but for County Durham it's decent enough. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and frankly isn't much to look at.

Walkers will appreciate the relative quiet - most tourists stick to the better-known spots around Barnard Castle. Families might find it a bit of a slog for younger children, though teenagers who can handle the terrain will enjoy the sense of achievement. Best tackled as part of a longer walking holiday, perhaps combining it with other Teesdale attractions.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Barnard Castle like Mickleton Mill or Hill Top Huts, it makes for a good half-day excursion when the weather's decent. Allow three hours return from the car park, and pack waterproofs - the weather can turn quickly up here.
