Chilterns Nature - Aston Rowant Nature Reserve

The chalk grassland at Aston Rowant opens up suddenly as you crest the ridge - that first view across the Chilterns stops you dead. This nature reserve sprawls across 172 acres of what used to be farmland, now managed to bring back the wildflowers and butterflies that had vanished when the fields went under the plough. In spring and early summer it's properly alive: marbled whites, chalkhill blues, and adonis blues dancing between the bird's-foot trefoil and horseshoe vetch. The walking is straightforward - mostly gentle paths that loop through the grassland with views that reach far enough on a clear day to make you forget High Wycombe exists five miles south.

This is a reserve for patient naturalists rather than casual strollers. Bring binoculars and a wildflower guide; bring time to sit and watch. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before legs get restless, but serious walkers and those after proper butterfly watching will stretch to a full afternoon. The grassland attracts over 30 butterfly species and a decent selection of birds - great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional hobby if you're lucky.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though late May through July is peak season for flowers and insects. Most of the camping sites within a few miles - White Mark Glamping, Home Farm Camping, or Chiltern Retreat - make decent bases if you're planning several days exploring the ridge. Aston Rowant sits right on the Icknield Way footpath too, so it slots easily into a longer walking route through the Chilterns.
