Crag Hill

Wind whips across the moorland as you climb towards what feels like the edge of the world. Crag Hill isn't County Durham's highest point, but it certainly feels remote enough to be. The rocky outcrop rises above the surrounding fell country near Barnard Castle, offering proper fell walking without the crowds you'd find in the Lakes.

Dedicated hikers will get the most from this one. The approach across open moorland demands decent boots and a good map - this isn't a waymarked trail sort of place. Weather can turn quickly up here, so pack layers even on what looks like a decent day. The views from the top stretch across Teesdale's rolling landscape, though on a grey day you might wonder what all the fuss was about.

Families with young children should probably give this a miss. The terrain's rough underfoot and the walk's longer than it looks on paper. Allow at least three hours for the round trip if you're starting from Barnard Castle area.
