Cragan Dubh

The walk up Creag Dubh from Pitlochry is properly steep - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You're climbing just over 500 metres of solid elevation gain, and the final push to the summit cairn will have your legs reminding you why. But when you crest the top, Tummel Valley spreads out below you like someone's laid it on specially for the view. On a clear day you can see for miles across Perthshire's rolling landscape.

It's a serious hill walk rather than a casual stroll, and you'll need proper footwear and a decent couple of hours to do it justice. The path is well-trodden but can get boggy in wet weather, so check the forecast before you head out. Most people allow between two and three hours return from the car park.

This one's for walkers who actually want a bit of effort, not armchair ramblers looking for an easy loop. Families with teenagers keen to bag a peak will get something out of it. Young children will struggle - it's relentless rather than technical, but the distance and gradient aren't forgiving. The summit itself is exposed, so wind can be a factor.
