Meall Dubh

The walk up Meall Dubh from Pitlochry isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the views. This 590-metre peak sits right above the town, making it a proper quick fix for anyone staying at Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park or one of the nearby campsites who can't face a full mountain day.

On a clear day you get the Tummel Valley spread out below you, and looking north the Highlands open up nicely. The ascent takes about 45 minutes from the car park, following a well-worn path through woodland before it gets rougher higher up. It's not technical walking - more of a steady grind - but the ground can be boggy in wet weather so proper boots matter.

This works best for fit families or walkers wanting a morning outing rather than a full expedition. Young kids might struggle with the gradient; teenagers and adults will find it manageable. The real appeal is how quickly you can get above Pitlochry and shake off the town crowds. You're looking at two hours total if you move at a reasonable pace.

Stay at River Tilt Park, Tighnavon Glamping Pods, or Blair Castle Caravan Park and you've got this sorted as an alternative to the bigger mountains nearby. Spring and autumn are best - summer can be midgy, winter often muddy. Free to climb, no facilities at the summit. Bring water and a windproof; the exposure at the top can catch you out.
