Dubh Chnocan

The walk up Dubh Chnocan from Pitlochry is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across Perthshire make the climb worth your while. It's not a Munro - that keeps the crowds down - but it's a proper little hill with enough elevation to feel like you've earned the effort, roughly two to three hours round trip depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

You're looking at decent woodland at the start, then open hillside with good vistas south towards the Lowlands. Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with older kids can manage it without drama, though younger legs might grumble on the way down. The summit itself is modest - not dramatic, but satisfying in a quiet way.

Pitlochry is close enough that you can make this part of a wider day, especially if you're basing yourself at Blair Castle Caravan Park or Kilvrecht Campsite, both solid spots just up the road. The town's got decent cafes and a bit of buzz that helps if the weather turns and you need a backup plan.

Go early if you can. The hill gets quieter before mid-morning, and you'll want light for the descent. No facilities on the hill itself - bring water and something to eat. Free to walk, obviously. It's a good half-day outing rather than a full expedition, which makes it handy alongside whatever else you're doing in the area.
