Dubh Chnocan

The walk up Dubh Chnocan from Pitlochry takes about two hours there and back, assuming you're not stopping every five minutes for photos. It's a straightforward woodland climb that builds gradually - nothing that'll have you gasping for air if you're reasonably fit, but steep enough to feel like you've earned the views once you reach the 579-metre summit.

What makes it worthwhile is the perspective you get over the Tummel Valley. On a clear day, the Perthshire hills roll out in every direction, and you can pick out Loch Tummel glinting below. The forest itself - mostly Scots pine and larch - is pleasant enough, especially in autumn when the colours are decent. Spring brings a good show of bluebells on the lower slopes.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a technical scramble, so families with older kids manage it fine, though younger ones might find the steady gradient tedious. Allow three hours if you're moving at a leisurely pace.

It's free, obviously, being a Scottish hillside. The Parkdean Tummel Valley Holiday Park sits just 2.7 miles away, which makes this a natural add-on if you're basing yourself there for a week. Glengoulandie Camping is equally close. If the weather turns or you fancy something less demanding, it's a proper hill to tick off without the commitment of a full day's walking.
