Credenhill Camp

A sprawling Iron Age hill fort three miles west of Hereford, Credenhill Camp sits on high ground with views across the Herefordshire countryside. What you're looking at is roughly 2,000 years of history compressed into earthworks and defensive ditches - the sort of place that rewards a proper walk around rather than a quick glance from the car park.

The fort itself is substantial. Multiple defensive lines still rise visibly from the grass, and on a clear day the strategic position becomes obvious - you can see why Iron Age settlers chose this spot. It's not dramatically photogenic like some hillforts, but if you're interested in how our ancestors actually organised defence and settlement, there's real meat here. Bring an ordnance survey map or download the Pastscape record beforehand, because there's precious little on-site interpretation.

This works best for walkers and archaeology types rather than families looking for a quick outing. Allow an hour minimum to do it justice, longer if you're mapping the entire circuit. Free access, as with most archaeological sites on public land, though facilities are non-existent.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Cuckoo's Corner or Long Coppice are closest at just over three miles - gives you a base for exploring the wider Herefordshire archaeology trail. Credenhill pairs well with Sutton Walls, another Iron Age fort, five miles south. Visit in autumn when the grass is manageable and the light is forgiving.
