National Trust - The Weir Garden

The River Wye curves through this National Trust garden just outside Hereford, and the setting alone is worth the trip. You're walking through proper woodland with the river as your constant companion - not manicured borders and rose beds, but something wilder and more genuine. The garden sits on a steep slope above the water, which means the views change as you move through it, and there's a genuine sense of discovery as paths twist down towards the riverbank itself.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to walkers and anyone who prefers their gardens a bit rough around the edges. You won't find pristine lawns or seasonal bedding here. Instead there are flowering shrubs, mature trees, and that particular magic you get when a garden works with its landscape rather than against it. The river walk itself is lovely - follow the paths down to the weir that gives the place its name, and you'll understand why they've kept this bit of the Wye largely untouched.

Allow a good hour, longer if you're the sort who stops to look at things properly. It's free entry, which is generous of the Trust. If you're camping nearby at Long Coppice or one of the other sites dotted around Hereford, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing without being a major expedition. The walk can get muddy, particularly in winter, so decent boots are sensible. It's not a destination that'll fill a whole day, but paired with a market town wander around Hereford itself, you've got something worth doing.
