Sugwas Pools

A string of shallow pools lined with reeds and surrounded by woodland - that's Sugwas, just outside Hereford. It's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning rather than a midday visit, when you've got a chance to actually spot something. Kingfishers are the draw here, along with plenty of waterfowl if you're patient enough to wait for them. The pools themselves are unremarkable from the car park - the real appeal comes from walking the perimeter paths and letting your eyes adjust. Birdwatchers will get proper value from an hour here, especially in spring and early autumn when migration picks up. Families with restless kids might find it a bit slow-paced unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds. It's free to access and there are decent tracks around the reserve, though nothing strenuous. Worth timing it for early morning or late afternoon when wildlife activity peaks. If you're camping at one of the sites nearby - Long Coppice is barely two miles away - it's an easy add-on before heading into Hereford itself. Don't expect dramatic scenery or dramatic facilities. What you get is a working nature reserve that locals take seriously, and that makes all the difference.
