Cricklade North Meadow - National Nature Reserve

The Thames Valley opens up properly at Cricklade North Meadow, a sprawling nature reserve where the river winds through wet grassland that floods seasonally and transforms the whole landscape. You're looking at one of England's finest examples of traditional hay meadow - the sort of place that makes botanists actually excited about wildflowers in spring and summer.

It's a walking reserve, really. There are paths threading through the meadows, and the best time to visit is late April through June when the fritillaries and other wildflower species are in full swing. Early mornings are worth the alarm clock; the light is gentler and the birds more vocal. Count on two to three hours if you're the type to stop and identify things. Casual strollers will be done in an hour.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this landscape is managed the way medieval farmers managed it - hay cut once a year, livestock grazed afterwards. It's a living museum of how the Cotswolds actually looked centuries back. That matters if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby like Hoburne Cotswold or Second Chance - they're close enough for a proper half-day outing without needing to drive far from Cirencester.

Bring binoculars. The bird life is decent year-round, and in winter the flooded sections attract waders. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of - just you, the meadows, and the Thames meandering through. It's free to access and genuinely rewarding if you've got an interest in landscape and wildlife rather than manicured attractions.
