Crook Knott

The walk up Crook Knott is a proper little lung-burner, but the effort pays off in spades. This fell sits just outside Kendal and gives you one of those rare views where you feel like you've stumbled onto something locals actually use rather than something designed for Instagram. The summit isn't dramatic - no jagged rocks or theatrical drops - but the panorama across the Lakeland fells is genuinely excellent, especially on a clear day when you can pick out recognizable peaks in the distance.

It's a walker's hill, really. Families with young kids might find the climb tedious, though older children keen on the outdoors will crack on without complaint. The terrain is straightforward enough - no scrambling or technical bits - just a steady grind through moorland. Allow yourself two hours return from the nearest parking, which beats a lot of Lakeland walks hands down.

If you're based at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Damson View Glamping - both within spitting distance - you could knock this out as a morning sortie before settling in elsewhere. Likewise, Lakeland Glamping at 2.9 miles makes it convenient for a pre-breakfast walk if you're the type. Crook Knott won't dominate your holiday, but it's worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy something gentler than the bigger fells but with genuine views to show for your effort.
