Cruachan Cruinn

The walk up Cruachan Cruinn from Arrochar is short but punchy - you're looking at around two hours there and back if you keep a decent pace. The summit sits at 857 metres, which doesn't sound massive until you're actually climbing it and the views across Loch Long start opening up below you. On a clear day, you can see right down into the Cowal Peninsula, and Ben Lomond rises up in the distance like it owns the place.

It's a proper hill walk rather than a stroll, with rocky sections that need a bit of scrambling near the top. The path itself is well-trodden and straightforward to follow, but it's steep enough that families with small children might find it frustrating - older kids who don't mind steep gradients will enjoy the challenge. Walkers and peak-baggers get the most from this one; it's the kind of hill that makes you feel like you've actually accomplished something without eating up half your day.

The nearest campsite is Beinglas, just 2.8 miles away - decent enough spot though the reviews are mixed. Tyndrum Holiday Park, 4.2 miles off, is better rated if you want more facilities. Either way, you're camping in proper Highlands territory here. Start early morning if you can; the weather changes fast in these parts, and you want good visibility for those views. Free to climb, naturally - it's a Scottish hill.
