Cucklet Church

The approach involves a scramble up to the entrance, nothing technical but enough to separate it from the drive-by attractions. This won't blow your mind if you're expecting something cathedral-sized, but there's something affecting about standing where people once hid to practise their faith. It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round though mud after rain can be grim. Campsite options abound - Derbyshire Hills is closest at just over two miles, while Chatsworth Park and Castleton Caravan Club sites offer excellent bases if you're making a proper trip of it. Pair it with walks across the limestone plateau and you've got half a decent day. Solo walkers and history buffs will get the most from it. Everyone else should be honest with themselves about whether a small cave justifies the detour.
