Dudsbury Camp, Iron Age Hillfort

The earthworks at Dudsbury are proper impressive - a massive Iron Age hillfort that still dominates the landscape north of Ringwood despite being nearly 2,500 years old. You're looking at concentric ramparts and ditches that would have housed a significant settlement, and walking the perimeter gives you a real sense of the effort that went into its construction. The thing is, there's no visitor centre or interpretation here. It's just the land itself - which means you either turn up knowing what you're looking at, or you spend a fair bit of time squinting at the bumps trying to work out which bit is which.

History types will find this genuinely rewarding. Walkers too - the site sits within easy reach of some decent countryside, and the ramparts make for a satisfying loop walk with actual purpose. Kids might find it a bit abstract; they'll get bored after twenty minutes unless they're the sort who enjoy clambering about on ancient earthworks. Allow an hour if you're taking time to read the landscape properly.

It's free and accessible year-round - no gates, no fees. The real advantage is that it sits nicely within reach of the Shorefield parks - Oakdene Forest Park and Forest Edge Holiday Park are both under four miles away. Meadowbank and Ashley Heath are only slightly further. So you can slot this into a broader Dorset park holiday without it feeling like a detour. Just go when the weather's decent and bring a decent map or local knowledge. The site won't hold your hand, but that's partly what makes it worth seeing.
