Easdale Island Folk Museum

Easdale Island itself is the draw here - a proper working community of maybe sixty folk living on a slate island just off the Argyll coast near Oban. The museum is small, housed in one of the island's cottages, and tells the story of the slate quarrying that built this place. You're looking at old tools, photographs of the quarries when they were thriving, and the sort of everyday objects that show how isolated island life actually was.

It's not a grand affair. Expect to spend thirty minutes, maybe forty-five if you're genuinely interested in industrial heritage or have kids asking questions. The real experience is the island itself - wandering the single-track roads, spotting the remnants of the quarrying industry still visible in the landscape, poking about the small shops and tea spots.

Families with younger children might find it a bit thin on engagement, though teenagers studying Scottish history would get something from it. Walkers and industrial archaeology types will find it worthwhile, especially if you combine it with a proper walk around the island's perimeter - the views back towards Oban and across the Firth of Lorn are genuinely excellent.

Getting there means a short ferry from Easdale's sister island of Seil - add another thirty minutes to your trip. Free admission to the museum, though donations are the lifeline. Summer's your best bet for the ferry running regularly and the tea shops being open. If you're based at Argyll Kayaker Cove or Sunnybrae Holiday Park nearby, this makes a decent half-day jaunt that breaks up a park holiday without requiring much planning.
