Flagstaff Hill barrow, Scheduled Monument 13770

A Bronze Age burial mound rises from the farmland southeast of Leven, marking where someone of importance was laid to rest some 4,000 years ago. Flagstaff Hill barrow might not look like much to the untrained eye - just a grassy bump in a field - but this scheduled monument represents one of Fife's most significant prehistoric sites.

Walking around the earthwork, you can still make out the circular outline where ancient mourners built up soil and stones over their chieftain's grave. The barrow commands decent views across the surrounding countryside, though it's the sense of deep time that really gets you thinking. Someone stood here millennia before the Romans ever set foot in Britain.

History enthusiasts will find it properly fascinating, especially if you're already exploring other ancient sites in the area. Kids might need a bit of imagination to get excited about what essentially looks like a large mound, but it's free to visit and you won't need more than half an hour.

Access seems to be via public footpaths, though do check locally as it sits on private land. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks around Leven - Woodland Gardens or Elie Holiday Park are both within easy reach - it makes for a nice short detour that adds some proper depth to your understanding of who lived here long before us.
