Flagstaff Hill

Steep paths wind up through gorse and heather to this modest summit overlooking the Fife coast. Flagstaff Hill won't challenge serious hikers - it's more of a brisk walk than a proper climb - but the views across to the Forth estuary and Edinburgh's skyline make it well worth the effort.

From the top, you can spot the Forth bridges on clear days, plus a decent stretch of coastline towards St Andrews. The hill sits just outside Leven, making it an easy add-on if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks along this stretch of coast. Families will find it manageable - my eight-year-old nephew made it up without too much moaning, though he did need a proper rest halfway.

It's free to access year-round, and you'll want about an hour for the round trip from the car park. Early morning or late afternoon light works best for photographs, plus you'll avoid the worst of the wind that can whip across the exposed summit. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are sensible.

Perfect for stretching your legs if you're based at Elie Holiday Park or one of the other sites dotted around this part of Fife. Not spectacular enough to plan a whole day around, but a lovely way to earn your fish and chips back in Leven.
